Get Closer with Larger-than-Life Images
The RF 100mm F2.8L MACRO IS USM is the world's first* AF macro lens with an impressive 1.4x close-up magnification, delivering stunning images. The Spherical Aberration Control ring allows you to adjust the bokeh with a soft focus effect, making it an exquisite portrait lens as well.
Spherical Aberration Control Ring
The RF 100mm F2.8L MACRO IS USM features a Spherical Aberration (SA) Control mechanism that customises the look of out-of-focus bokeh areas, both in front of and behind the subject, and produces a soft-focus effect on the subject itself. An additional control ring on the lens governs an electronic cam that independently actuates the focusing and floating lens groups using two Nano USMs. This mechanism changes their location from infinity to close-up, altering the spherical aberration to achieve the desired bokeh effect.
Hybrid Image Stabiliser
The RF 100mm F2.8L MACRO IS USM includes an optical Hybrid Image Stabiliser offering up to 5 stops of compensation (CIPA standard) or up to 8 stops with coordinated Image Stabilisation with a camera that has In-Body Image Stabilisation (IBIS) (CIPA standard and tested with the EOS R5). In macro photography, vibrations are greatly exaggerated due to the high magnifications. Canon's Hybrid IS addresses this by providing up to 2 stops of IS at 1x magnification (under Canon's test conditions). The combination of this and high-speed RF communication means this lens surpasses the best technology in the EF range. With compatible Canon cameras that feature in-body stabilisation, even higher levels of compensation are possible.
Dual Nano USM Focusing Motor
Using two Nano USM AF motors drives the lightweight optical elements with speed, precision, and near-silent control, ideal for both video and stills. For high-speed focusing, a more compact lens design, and closer focusing, a floating lens group system is used, which requires two focus motors. One Nano USM is for the conventional focusing group, and the other is for the floating focus group, allowing them to be driven independently for SA control and focus breathing suppression.
Features and Benefits
- 1.4x Macro Magnification: Reveals details that other macro lenses cannot.
- Spherical Aberration Control: Provides ultimate control over bokeh and soft focus.
- F2.8 Aperture: Ensures great performance in all situations.
- Dual Nano USM: Offers smooth, fast, and near-silent focusing.
- Up to 5-Stops Optical Hybrid Image Stabiliser: Delivers exceptional stability in low light.
- Lens Control Ring: Allows you to change settings while still viewing the subject.
